Facilitation skills for Project Leaders


A facilitator is often called “a guide on the side, not a sage on the stage.”  
Facilitations skill is one of the critical skills for project leaders. Agile approaches have been promoting facilitative leadership, and most of the agile leadership roles stress facilitation skills, for example, Scrum Master or Agile Coach. The importance of facilitation skills for project managers is also growing. 

In a chapter System for Value Delivery, the PMBOK® Guide Seventh Edition elaborates eight functions associated with a project, and one of the functions is Facilitation and Support. 
 “…the work involves encouraging project team member participation, collaboration, and a shared sense of responsibility for the work output. Facilitation helps the project team create consensus around solutions, resolve conflicts, and make decisions. Facilitation is also required to coordinates meetings and contribute in an unbiased way to the advancement of project objectives.” – PMBOK® Guide Seventh Edition.
